RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.
The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
